Building Conversions & the NYC Housing Crisis

As NYC continues to search for solutions to the housing crisis, converting existing buildings into transitional and/or permanent housing is gaining momentum. Office spaces and hotels offer infrastructure that can accelerate conversions, while former industrial spaces provide design flexibility despite requiring extensive renovations. Of course, zoning considerations play a key role in these transformations, determining how and where buildings can be repurposed. Each approach contributes to expanding housing options, transforming underutilized spaces into stable places for those who need a home.

Pictured: 4380 Bronx Boulevard Shelter involved the renovation and conversion of a two-story, 20,000-square-foot manufacturing facility into a 108-bed homeless shelter for Project Renewal. Five sculptural roof structures over each sleeping quarter provide a special interior experience while providing light and air rendering the deep floor plate habitable.
