Located in the Claremont Village neighborhood of the Bronx, 3500 Park Apartments provides 115 studio and 2-bedroom apartments for integrated, supportive, affordable, and senior housing.

Summer is in the air and it’s a great time to spotlight some of our educational projects. As students and staff across the City conclude the school year and prepare for vacation, we take a look at some of our contributions to the educational landscape.

The two upper floors at PS32K’s new addition provide Pre-K, Kindergarten, and 1st grade classrooms as well as a rooftop ECC playground for the youngest students. The playground features modular, moveable play systems by Snug Play USA, which encourage child-directed, cooperative play.

When the Madison Square Boys & Girl’s Club reached out for a redesign of its indoor community pool at the Thomas S. Murphy Clubhouse, we were thrilled. The existing natatorium, original to the 1920’s building needed an update including, new finishes, a reshaped pool floor, updated lighting, new gutter and return systems, de-humidification systems and a new entry lobby for spectators.

Although the project was completed nearly 20 years ago, it feels like yesterday that we partnered with the Charles B. Wang Community Health Center on our fourth project located on Canal Street. The renovation of this six-floor cast iron building includes general medicine, OB/GYN, and mental health services, along with administrative offices.

Phelps House and Judith Edelman were featured in Phaidon’s recent publication, The Brutalists: Brutalism’s Best Architects— “If Brutalism is very often architecture aiming for the dramatic expression of its function, here it is modest and comparatively unassuming, yet, as in the example of Phelps House, still confident and assured in its convictions—just like the architect.”

Following ICL’s successful Gala Night honoring Governor Hochul and Robert Myers, we look back at one of our favorite ICL projects, 1070 Myrtle Avenue, a 6-story, 32,000 SF building located in Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn. The building provides supportive housing for people living with mental health concerns.

For last month’s Five Borough Bike Tour, our staff were equipped with some very cool ESKW/Architects cycling caps. Thank you, Bike Tour veterans, Sarah Holtzer and Dan Horn, for designing the caps and representing the office on the Bike Tour! Great ride!

We worked with the Children’s Aid Organization’s palette of standard colors to link the space to the organization’s branding.

The Emerson and the Old School (pictured) share a grand entryway and a two-story light-filled lobby, as well as indoor and outdoor community spaces. The metal-clad top floor of the two new stories on the Old School is visually differentiated from the original brick façade, rebuilt to replicate the original design.

ESKW/Architects is honored to have received Community Access’ Affordable Housing Advocate of the Year award at last week’s Good Neighbor Gala.

Before redevelopment, the Baptist Church of the Redeemer sanctuary had been in disrepair for over a decade. Over time, care of religious facilities becomes challenging; partnering with a developer that will protect the interest of the church was critical.

At PS32K’s new lobby, the thresholds leading into the cafeteria, library, and main staircase are accented with distinct colors, creating an intuitive wayfinding experience for students, staff, and visitors of all ages. The new main stair is day-lit, spacious, and identified with vibrant yellow tiles to designate the special threshold.

We renovated the Emerson (pictured), a former trade school, and the Old School, a turn-of-the-century model tenement building, into 86 new affordable studios, one-, and two-bedroom apartments.The project was awarded for its excellence in historic preservation by the Preservation League of NYS and the New York Construction Magazine.

Housing a Primary School, an Intermediate/High School, a program for children with special needs, and a Community Center, New Settlement Community Campus distinguishes the buildings’ multiple programs through visual and material cues.

On Sunday, April 23rd we installed a “ghost bike” for our dear, late colleague, Eric Salitsky, who was tragically killed last year while riding his bike in Brooklyn.

Archer Green is a new, 100 percent affordable housing development in downtown Jamaica, Queens. The project provides 387 apartments, extensive residential amenities, a community facility, and retail space.

1561 Walton is an 11-story affordable housing building in the Mt. Eden neighborhood of the Bronx. The triangular-shaped lot is the result of historic overlays of zoning that created unusual property lines. The massing of the masonry façade is broken into four planes differentiated through brick colors that form a gradient.

Located in Far Rockaway near the ocean in a residential district, this two-story daycare center accommodates 165 children.

Wood fragments gathered from fallen trees are intuitively mined for latent formal possibilities and interwoven into surprising and vibrant compositions that are meant to depict specific memories, people, and places from Joe’s life.
